My Top 15 Favourite Anime 2023!

There were so many great anime this year, with jam-packed music-themed anime in the fall season like Paradox Live, to found family comedies like Buddy Daddies and action-packed drama which had us on the edge of our seats with Bungo Stray Dogs season 5 – as the anime caught up with the Manga – so there were no spoilers to what will happen next!

I’ve had a thrilling anime journey this year and here are my Top 15 favourite anime of 2023!

15. Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion

Release date: Spring 2023
Studio: Typhoon Graphics
Theme: Isekai, Romance, Adapted from Manhwa

This is the first josei romance anime I have come across which is adapted from a Manhwa. I enjoyed the BGM song played in the boat scene with the main leads enjoying the fireworks. My favourite character is Adam Taylor and I like how the scene where Raeliana asks him for help was adapted.

14. The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior

Release date: Summer 2023
Studio: OLM Team Yoshioka
Theme: Isekai, Romance, Adapted from Light Novel

Strong female lead, I liked how she supported all the characters in a positive way by encouraging them and motivating them.

13. My Happy Marriage

Release date: Summer 2023
Studio: Kinema Citrus
Theme: Historical, Romance, Adapted from Light Novel, Supernatural

I love the Opening song “Anata no Soba ni. (貴方の側に。)” by Riria. The first half of the anime was great and the art style quality is amazing. during the latter half I did get a bit bored when the cousin came into the picture. Nevertheless, it ended well. Hoping for a season 2.

12. Skip and Loafer

Theme: Adapted from Manga, Seinen, Highschool

This was an interesting anime. I thought it would be a wholesome cute anime based on the OP song and cute art style as I have not read the manga, however it exceeded my expectation as we understand Shima’s POV. All the characters are likeable and especially the female protagonist, Mistumi as she adjusts into her new life in the city and has a positive impact towards those around her from her energetic and earnest personality.

11. Buddy Daddies

Release date: Winter 2023
Studio: P.A. Works
Theme: Not adapted from manga, Found family, Action, Comedy

I really liked Rei’s development in this series and there were many comedic moments. The ending was wholesome and well rounded too. Check out my detailed first impression review here.

10. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc

Release date: Spring 2023
Studio: Ufotable
Theme: Adapted from Manga, Action, Samurai, Supernatural

I love Mitsuri, she is such a strong and beautiful character inside and out. Also love the green and pink colour combination. Tanjiro and Nezuko are the best sibling duo I have seen in an anime IMO. I love how they support each other and this series brilliantly showed their bond in such an emotive way.

9. I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: Zero-G, Digital Network Animation
Theme: Adapted from Light Novel, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

This is my favourite Rom-Com anime this year. Allen and Charlotte have such great chemistry and Allen’s sister is a great wing-girl supporting their slow burn romance. It’s a cute and wholesome anime that made me laugh. The magical creatures are adorable too.

8. Undead Murder Farce

Release date: Summer 2023
Studio:Lapin Track
Theme: Adapted from Novel, Detective, Action, Historical

Eccentric detectives and flamboyant characters fighting for the Platinum night diamond. The fight scene between Tsugaru, Lupin and other guys was fun to watch as it looked like they were enjoying the thrill of the fight. The OP song is catchy too which matches the unhinged characters. Hope we get a second season.

7. HYPNOSIS MIC -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima+

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Theme: Music, Rap battles, teamwork

Second season of Hypnosis Mic, we are introduced to two a few new teams and some of them are friends of the original cast. It was good to see all the cast collaborate and also lots of comical moments. I liked the OP song too.

6.The Yuzuki Family's Four Sons

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: Shuka
Theme: Family, Wholesome, Orphans

Hayato, the oldest brother looks after his three younger brothers after their parents passed away in an accident. Each episode focuses on the POV of one of the brothers as we see their daily lives of being a family caring for each other in their own way and their brotherly bond 🙂

5. Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: Diomedéa
Theme: Detectives, Comedy, Murder mystery

Ron a former detective who was framed and Toto a rookie detective team up to solve unresolved cases and unravel the truth of Ron’s past throughout their detective journey. Enjoyed the goofiness of Ron and Toto’s banter as well as getting to see the murder case explained. Season 2 has been confirmed!

4. Paradox Live the Animation

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: Pine Jam
Theme: Music, Competition, Holographic images, Sci-Fi, Friendship

This music anime was full of angst and trauma. I love the friendship that develops between the teams and this is illustrated in the final song where they all sing together to save their friend. Episode 11 was my favourite, the song by BURAIKAN is so good, I can’t wait for the full version of the song to come out.

3. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: MAPPA
Theme: Shounen, Supernatural, Action, Strong fighters

The OP song is a banger and it is supposed to be a song for the villains and omg the villains in this series did a great job being one especially Mahito and Sukuna but still hate Mahito and what he did. Choso and his brotherly love was endearing. My respect for Nanami went up, he is the definition of a great masculine gentleman.

MAPPA did a great job animating Gojo as always (so much fan service for the girls haha). This is the best shounen anime which portrays strong female characters without sexualising them. On the other hand, a lot of eye candy for the female gaze without the characters even taking their shirt off. Bravo to MAPPA.

2. The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: Zero-G, Liber
Theme: Office Romance, adorably shy male lead, cat loving female lead, supernatural.

This is my favourite romance anime for 2023. Himura as such a cute male lead that gets bashful and excited when it comes to cats and Fuyutsuki. He cannot hide his emotions and they come out in the form of snow inherited from his snow spirit lineage. I would deffo reccommend this anime if you love Watakoi (2018) or an adorable ML.

1. Bungo Stray Dogs 5th Season

Release date: Fall 2023
Studio: Bones
Theme: Action, Dystopia, Military, Detective Agency, Psychological War, Angst.

My number one favourite anime for 2023 which had me at the edge of my seat during that Dazai and Chuuya scene and baeling my eyes out at the end, Bungo Stray Dogs season 5 was an abosulte epic anime. It was such a rollercoaster ride with various character sub plots happening at the same time and Chuuya pretending to be a vampire was just hilarious.

This series was well written and enjoyed every moment of it. 10/10, exhilarating and emotive.
